Women should not rule out wearing a
breast feeding nightie and providing sustenance to their babies via this method as it is a natural process and cheaper than formula, a leading doctor has claimed.
Dr Luisa Dillner was responding in her Guardian column to recent figures that suggested one third of mothers in the UK have never breastfed and that the benefits are not as far-reaching as first thought.
But she claimed that by approaching feeding in the right way, it can be a rewarding experience for both mother and child.
She wrote: " Relax, get comfortable and ensure your back is supported. Hold your baby's neck and upper back but allow it to latch on itself.
" If the head is bobbing around, direct it gently so the mouth is over your nipple. Squeeze a little milk towards the mouth, but don't splatter it all over the baby's face."
Despite adopting a relatively pro-breastfeeding stance, Dr Dillner insisted that if mothers do not react well to breastfeeding they should have no fears about formula feeding.
