New mothers who are wearing their first
button down nightie and getting to grips with breastfeeding have been advised to do some preparation before they give it a go, the Sunday Mirror reports.
It's assumed that breastfeeding is something that should come naturally to every mother, but it takes time and when combined with other stresses it can become too much.
Gillian Fletcher, former president of the National Childbirth Trust, recommends sticking with breastfeeding and trying to get some support and advice off other mothers in the same position.
Speaking to the paper, she said: " A lot of women think if you've not cracked it by day two, you're not going to. But sometimes it takes a while for you and your baby to understand each other.
" With the right support, most women can breastfeed for as long as they want. Often it will come naturally, but if not, having a chance to talk things through is helpful."
The Department of Health says mothers should exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of a child's life.
