What is a pregnancy belly band?
Lots of our clothes come with in-built pregnancy belly bands, which are soft and stretchy ‘grown-on’ waistbands that expand the width of your trousers, skirt or jeans as your bump grows. A maternity belly band will also give your bump some support and stop your tummy peeking out if shorter tops ride up.
Are there benefits of a belly band during pregnancy?
Choosing clothes with an in-built pregnancy support band gives you an instant boost. Not only will your bump feel supported and snug, but the band will also take some of the weight of your growing baby off your hips and lower back, making your day-to-day movement feel just that little bit easier. The flexible fabric we use for our belly bands is extremely soft, making it perfect for the extra sensitive skin on bumps. We also carefully consider the stretch factor of our fabrics, making sure they give just the right amount of support and movement to adapt to your changing shape.
How a belly band can help you feel your best during pregnancy:
- Research shows that wearing a belly band during pregnancy may help support your lower back and baby bump, resulting in a reduction of pain in your back and joints
- The gentle compression of a belly band can act as a supportive sling for your bump – some people compare it to the support provided by a sports bra – giving you a helping hand during your day-to-day activities
- A belly band keeps on giving even after birth, providing post-partum support for stretched and aching muscles
How to wear a maternity belly band
Our maternity jeans come with the choice of an under-bump band or an over-bump band. Both are great for creating a snug and supportive fit all through your pregnancy and beyond. An under-bump belly band can help hold your bump from underneath, while and over-bump belly bump pulls right up over your bump, keeping you covered from all angles. This extra insulation makes an over-bump band a great choice during the colder months, too, when you don’t want to feel the chill of a sweater or top accidentally riding up.
Seraphine’s Maternity Bands
You’ll find belly bands incorporated into our trousers, skirts, jeans, shorts and leggings. We love how they give extra support and various fit options depending on your needs. Here are the different types:
Over-the-Bump Belly Bands
If you’re looking for a little more security and support, our over-bump bands pull up over your tummy and sit securely under the bust. Made from silky soft fabric that stretches and shrinks to fit your changing body, this style of maternity band is ultra-comfortable and reassuring. You’ll find these bands incorporated into our denim collection, as well as lots of other items throughout our range.
Maternity Belt Band
The belt band has amazing stretch and memory, making it great for trousers that work right the way through your pregnancy and then during the post-partum period, hugging like a second skin and giving great support.
Maternity Drawstring Waistband
A simple drawstring waistband is ideal for adjusting the fit of your maternity trousers during your pregnancy. Worn under the bump, the drawstring can be cinched in or let out depending on your size (and comfort levels!), giving you ultimate control.
Rollover Belly Band
The rollover band found in some of our pregnancy leggings is perfect fo anyone who wants the versatility of a waistband that can be worn pulled up and over your bump or rolled down to be styled as a supportive band underneath.
Post-Partum Compression Bands
Once you’ve given birth, you’ll find the belly bands you’ve been wearing throughout pregnancy will still feel supportive and super comfortable. However – if you are looking for something a little more shaping – post-partum compression bands give that reassuringly firm feeling of being gently held around the middle while your body eases back after birth. You’ll find mid-level compression bands on both our post-maternity leggings and post-maternity jeans.
Picking the Right Belly Band for You
As with so many aspects of pregnancy, the right choice is all down to personal preference and will be completely unique to you. So, with that in mind, don’t be afraid to try different belly band options and find out what works best for you! You may also notice that different styles of belly bands suit your needs in distinct ways as you move through each trimester.
As your body changes during pregnancy, a belly band is a reassuring way to introduce that extra bit of flexibility, support and comfort. And, since you’ll find over and under-bump bands already included on lots of our clothes, we’ve made incorporating that additional boost into your pregnancy wardrobe that little bit easier. So, you can concentrate on the important things while feeling stylishly supported.
